MAGNETO

Definition

A self-contained, engine-driven device that makes its own spark once the engine is turning, with no battery required. FAA regulations (14 CFR § 33.37) require dual ignition, which is why most aircraft carry two.

Magnetos showed up on cars first in 1899 but by the 1920s cars ditched them for battery ignition. Aircraft never did. Over a century later, your engine still runs on the same tech your car's great-great-grandparent gave up on, because it's the one system that keeps sparking even if the whole electrical system dies.
